Traveling Through Time

By Melissa Monette

If there is anything that every single person in the world possesses, it is the journey of the past, the present and the future.  The past contains the memories that we hold dear to us.  The present, is what we are living in and who we are.  The future is where we store our ambitions and desires to live the life that we so greatly want.  Each step of the journey helps piece together the person we were, the person we are and the person that we will one day be.  The things we do in our life and the people that surround us, help shape who we are now and for Ottawa 67's defenseman, Carter Trevisani this is exactly how he got to where he is today.

Growing up 15 minutes south of Guelph, in the town of Carlile, Carter Trevisani was always surrounded by family.  Family has played a big part in his life.  When his father was nine years old, he moved to Canada from Italy.  Carter's mothers parents are Irish-Canadian.

Like most families, his had traditions during the festive seasons.  At Christmastime, his entire family would go to his Nona's house. (Nona is the Italian name for grandmother.)  The family would gather and open presents given to each other from Carter's grandparents, go to midnight mass and eat a fish dinner.

After the death of his Nona, Carter's family began holding Christmas Eve at their house.

"Christmas Eve is a big thing in our family," Carter said, "it's nice because it is when I have always come home from hockey for the break and all of the family is there together.  They get excited to see me but I get excited to see them too."

Family is not only important to Carter, they all live in close proximity.  "We all live very close to each other so there is never a large amount of time that goes by without seeing at least one of them."  Carter's mother's parents, live next door to him and his family.  His Uncle lives on the street beside his and his aunt lives within a very short driving distance.  Carter and his cousin Josh, who is five years older, grew up together and are best friends.

The family ties do not stop there; Carter's immediate family is also very close.

"My sister Joy and I are pretty close too," Carter commented, "we do a lot of things together when I am back home."  Carter and Joy often play video games and go shopping together.

"Joy usually beats me pretty bad when we play video games," Carter confessed.  His sister is not only a friend to him but she is also one of Carters biggest supporters.

"My sister is my biggest fan, she would do anything for me, she is such a great supporter and I know that if I ever have a bad day, or a bad game, I can talk to her about it.  Sometimes, I forget and take it for granted but she knows that I appreciate everything she does," Carter said of his sister.  He and his sister talk everyday on the phone and keep in touch when Carter is out of town.

Moving to the present, Carter left home to play hockey away in Ohio State University in 2000, where he also enrolled in University full time.  He admits that life was very different once he left home.

"Life away from home is really different, I was home sick for about a month until I was into a routine and met new people.  I had a good time in Ohio," Carter said.  Carter made the decision to leave Ohio and take a shot at playing OHL hockey.  When he came to the Ottawa 67's, everyone knew that he would be a great asset the second he stepped on the ice.

"I remember watching Carter's first game with Ottawa, he has a skill for skating like I've never seen.  His puck handling was great too," one fan commented about Carter.

During his last season with Ottawa in 2002-2003, Carter was assistant captain, scored 36 points with Ottawa and clocked mounds of ice time.  With the season being so busy he hardly had time to think about what to do next year but towards the end of the season Carter took some time to think about the future.

"Being with Ottawa was the best move I ever made," Carter said with assurance, "I am very happy with my decision.  Leaving home helped me grow as a person.  Plus, Ottawa is such a great place to live and it was so much fun being here, even though it is too cold," Carter laughed.  He knows that being in Ottawa has helped him find the right path to follow in the future.

"Hockey has opened so many doors for me to future hockey and schooling opportunities.  I think that my success in Ottawa will help me succeed in the future," his success has not gone unnoticed and he hopes to play for either a Canadian University or abroad in Europe.

"I would love to play in Italy where my father comes from, or play at a university here in Canada."

Carter's success has not gone with out credit.  He knows that being under the strict coaching of Brian Kilrea, while in Ottawa, has helped him be the best player that he can.

"Brian has taught me a lot about not only hockey, but about myself, and I can use what I was taught in the future."

The future not only is filled with dreams of hockey.  Carter wants to finish his plan of obtaining a higher education and graduate from University.  After he would like to go into business and perhaps be a salesman.

"I really want to focus on getting my University degree so that I have something to fall back on," he stated.

The past for Carter is filled with joyous memories of family and friends.  The present is who Carter is today.  The future is filled with dreams of prospective teams, schooling and more memories to come.  Carter may have finished his time in the Ontario Hockey League, but his life is still in the making.  For Carter, this is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, it is simply the end of the beginning.
